Oops…your values are showing!
Most of us believe that in our professional lives, we make decisions and act in ways that are objective. But there is no absolute objectivity.
Our beliefs, perspectives, values, strengths and insecurities are present in every action we take - whether we’re aware of them or not. And as a leader, these unseen influences dictate almost everything you do - from the way you run meetings, to how you engage with your team, to what you prioritize.
The funny thing is, that even though you might be unaware of these unconscious influences on you, everyone around you is well aware of them! Because they are revealed with every word you say and every action you take.
You might think that in order to be a more effective leader, you need to sharpen your operational skills, and I agree that those skills are absolutely important to have. But what you might have overlooked is the fact that if you’re unaware of what beliefs, perspectives and values are driving you and how they’re driving you, your actions will come from an unconscious and unintentional place. And an unconscious, unintentional leader isn’t going to be as effective or impactful as one who is conscious and purposeful.
I believe that engaging in the deep inner work to uncover subconscious and default drivers of behaviour is essential for leaders. This work isn’t the kind of thing that looks great on your resume or in your LinkedIn bio, but it will enable you to lead from intention and purpose instead of being run by old patterns and default behaviour.
As a certified coach, I’ve got lots of tools and ways of supporting you with this work. One of my absolute favourites is the Energy Leadership Index® (ELI) Assessment. Send me an email if you’d like to learn more!
